The intention of this piece is to remind our children never to forget about their cultural roots or lose their identity.

When my son was much younger, we all used to wear African attire as a family (And co). He told me one day when I asked him to wear African attire, I think he was 10yrs old, that “I don’t want to wear Nigeria mommy”. I laughed and this has since been his slang/nickname.

At a church event last year where we celebrate diversity and people wear different cultural attires to represent their countries, I got our African attires out. As a Nigerian mother that loves to dress in my African attire and also encourages my children to wear them, I wasn’t happy when my son refused to wear his. I later found out the reason was that his other African friends don’t wear it and made fun of him whenever he wears his Nigerian outfit.

To change the narrative, I decided to look for some designers who infuse Ankara fabrics to create modern outfits for our kids to encourage them to wear Nigerian attires.

He loves all the tracksuit designs I found and has been wearing them since.
